Two Western Mass
Distance Project Runners Three-peat in Week Four
Dennis Roche
and Dawn Roberts
continue their winning ways, each capturing a 3rd consecutive victory. Some fast
times were recorded today as four runners broke 17 minutes, quite the change of
pace after last week's untimely snowstorm yielded the 2nd slowest winning time
in history.
The pack of Dennis, Bryan Dec, Mark Rabasco
and Holyoke High XC star Izaien Lugo (16:07, 16:45, 16:55,
16:57 respectively) bettered Greater Springfield Harrier top ace
Sandu Rebenciuc. Sandu ran a 15:38 (7th all-time fastest!)
some 20+ years ago, but his 17:10 could
only earn him 5th overall today. On most Saturdays this would be good enough to
secure a win, but today was one of more deeper fields in recent years. In
fact it's been nearly ten years to the day since Joe Czupryna lead five runners
under 17 minutes when he cruised to a 15:52 on
12/23/2006.
Today Dennis, fresh off
his 15:46, 7th place showing at the Hot Chocolate 5k in NoHo earlier this month, scorched the Snowstorm 5k course in 16:07. A light rain and temperatures right around the freezing
point made for slick roads in spots which was the only thing holding Dennis back
from erasing one of the older age records (John
Mathews Age 30 16:02 12/5/1987). Consolation can be taken as his time today ranks as the 26th
all-time fastest 5K
times. Meanwhile, Dawn Roberts pulled out a ten second victory over
Allision Haryasz collecting win #43, further extending her lead in the
Snowstorm Classic Hall Of Fame.
It's early in 10 week point series but Dennis and Dawn are building a
healthy, but not insurmountable, lead over Mark Rabasco, Bruce Christensen, Colleen Cummings
and Audrey Boraski in the
respsective
male and
female standings.
In
the team scoring Western Mass Distance Project lead
Greater Springfield Harriers and Hartford Track Club with Empire One also
scoring a full 5 person squad.
