History

The Race of Champions Marathon is held in memory of Walter H. Childs Sr., the founder of the race who died in 1991.
The race served as the AAU National Championships and was the Pan American qualifier in the late 60's
Now in it's 57th year, the Childs Marathon is the 10th oldest consecutive running marathon in America and 19th in the world.

Race Details

  • Always the 1st Sunday in May: Start Time is 8:00AM.
  • USATF sanctioned & certified course and a Boston Mararthon Qualifier
  • T-shirts to first 250 runners pre-registered by April 19, 2019
  • Finishers medal & post-race dinner for all runners

    Course

    The course is USATF certified and can be used as a qualifying race for entry into the Boston Marathon. The course is very scenic including country roads, both dirt and paved.

    Number Pick-up

    Post Race Party & Awards Ceremony

    Time: Approx 12pm at the Summit View Pavilion
    Post Race food for all finishers by Hamels Catering
    Parking and restroom facilities are available in the rear by the Pavilion area.

    Cash Prizes Top 3 Male & Female Overall: 1st $100, 2nd $75, 3rd $50
    Fast Feet Certificates Winners in each age group: Under 40, 40-49, 50-59, 60 & over (no double dipping)

    Lodging

    There are many motels in the area, particularly on Route 5, Exit 13 off I-91 in West Springfield. Including: Days' Inn (413-785-5365), Red Roof Inn (413-731-1010), Clarion (413-781-8750). In addition the America's Best Value Inn, 671 Northampton Ave. (413 536-3377), Holyoke Hotel & Conference Center, at exit 15 (413 534-3311) and are located near to the start in Holyoke.

    Restaurants

    There are a variety of restaurants along Route 5 from West Springfield to Holyoke.
    For the traditional carbo-loading, we suggest Red Rose Pizzeria, 1074 Main St., Springfield, Pizzeria Uno at the Holyoke Mall (exit 15 rte 91, JP's, and Cracker Barrel on Whiting Farm Rd off of Rt 91 Exit 15.
