When I first started running, I experienced very acute lower back pain. Three things contributed to the problem - 1)Bad shoes 2)Too many hills in training too soon 3)Too much coffee. Not getting enough cushioning from my cheap department-store shoes and piling on alot of uphill and, especially, downhill miles caused sharp pain in the area just above the pants rear pockets. This signaled to me a possible irritation to the kidney/bladders area. I corrected the shoe problem (go to Fast Feet in West Springfield) and excess addition of downhill mileage, and for insurance, drank about half of my usual 6-cup coffee intake. Everything cleared up beautifully in just a couple of weeks. Rule out these factors, and if no success, see a specialist. Good Luck!
