Peter- I'd agree with "another marathoner" that pacing is your best bet for a happy finish. Choose a reasonable goal for yourself and don't get caught up in the excitement by going out too fast (which will not feel too fast at the time!)You can get a pacing bracelet at runnersworld's website to help keep yourself in check. I would say not to get too caught up in a lofty time goal- finishing your first marathon is quite an achievement- go out and enjoy it. And don't forget to taper before hand- you need the rest to be strong! Good luck!!
