Jay Kolodzinski & Kelly Heroux
Barney Day Champs
April 19th is the traditional Patriots
Day, and while most of the running world celebrated at the Boston
Marathon, where oven like conditions wilted even the strongest
runners, Western Mass runners had their own Patriots Day
tradition….the Everett Barney Day Race which opened the 25th
annual Summer Sizzler season.
Appropriately, the weather conditions were the same
in Springfield, hazy, hot and humid, but that didn’t deter Jay
Kolodzinski nor Kelly Heroux from capturing their first ever Summer
Sizzler victories. Both
thus join the Summer Sizzler Hall of Fame, Jay as the 113th
overall winner and Kelly as the 113th female winner.
Jay motored around the Forest Park roads without overheating
in 30:47, outracing Tom
Michaud (31:29) and Eric Brown (32:15).
Robert Olsen was first master in 33:57, Kevin Young took the
senior title in 37:46, and Bruce Rockwell topped the veterans in
39:12.
Kelly cruised across the finish line in 34:01, taking the
checkered flag over first master Elizabeth Duquette (36:45) and Kim
Gibbons (45:37).
